The Department of Ophthalmology of Sasoon Hospital provides tertiary care to the poor and needy patients of Western Maharashtra under National Programme for Control of Blindness and with the support of other National and International NGOs. They screen approx 800 patients every week out of which 25% patients need laser or surgical management. If not treated on time these patients may become permanently blind resulting in their personal, social, economic deterioration. Sassoon hospital conducts the Diabetes OPD every Wednesday, where comprehensive patient care is done. Approx 150-200 patients benefit from the services of Diabetes OPD every week. Nearly 120 patients from Diabetes OPD, is referred for retinopathy screening, out of which at least 15 require immediate surgical management or laser treatment for preservation of vision. Being a tertiary care referral centre, patients who have undergone blunt or penetrating trauma, are also referred from peripheral centers. 4-5 trauma patients are admitted per week in Ophthalmology ward. They have well trained staff which includes one full time senior vitreo-retinal surgeon, two visiting experienced vitreo-retinal surgeons , two senior residents with vitreo-retinal fellowships to cater to the vitreoretinal services. RC Nigdi did the survey and undestood the need & decided to provide following machines 1) High-end posterior vitrectomy machine 2) Operating microscope 3) EIBOS 2 Wide-angle viewing system This is project is being done under global grant
